The Coast Guard Investigative Service (CGIS) is the criminal investigative element for the United States Coast Guard. Mission areas include: - Criminal Investigations involving the Uniform Code of Military Justice. - Criminal Investigations involving violations of the United States Code. - Personnel Security Investigations to determine suitability for security clearances. (This mission area, with several exceptions, was transferred to the Office of Personnel Management on 01 March 2002.) - Protective Service Operations in support of the Commandant of the Coast Guard, the U.S. Secret Service and Diplomatic Security Service. - Intelligence and Counter-Intelligence Operations. CGIS Special Agents are a mix of career civilian Federal Law Enforcement and senior enlisted or Warrant Officer military personnel.
